The amazing 'Fenomenon Stratos' attracted a huge crowd at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show and is expected to repeat the feat at Frankfurt.
The car on display in Geneva was not yet fully functional, but a fully running version is expected at the Frankfurt Motorshow. Sales are focussed on developing countries where the poor road conditions would perfectly suit the car's characteristics, much in the mould of the original rally-winning Stratos of the 1970s. There have been many calls for Lancia to revive the Stratos but Lancia and the Fiat Group no longer own the rights to the name. "Stratos" owned by a London-based automotive design consultancy called Fenomenon, which presented its very own Stratos to the world in Geneva. The project of lifelong Stratos fan and Austrian-born Christian Hrabalek, the car was developed with input from rally driver Sandro Munari, who had many successes in the original. The new Stratos has been designed more as a usable road-going supercar than workable rally car, able to cope with poor roads and a lack of supportive infrastructure common to lesser developed countries. Styled by a team of 10 professional designers including Serge Porscher (responsible for the Citroen Pluriel), the aviation inspired appearance includes gullwing doors opening from around a split front windscreen. The apple-green prototype on show in Geneva is fitted with the 425bhp V8 from the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale, and is theoretically capable of over 210mph and 0-60mph in 3.8 seconds. Although some way from production, the Concept is said to be production-feasible and Hrabalek has already raised funding from private investors to help develop the prototype to its current stage of development.
